Kindle Fire 2 Coming in July?

CNET yesterday quoted “a credible source” saying that Amazon will unveil a second-generation Kindle Fire this summer, with a possible launch event on July 31. This is the first time I’ve seen a summer debut of the Fire 2 suggested. Earlier rumors had the new device landing sometime before the holiday season.

CNET’s source said the new Fire will have a camera and physical volume-control buttons. David Carnoy is all over this story for CNET, with more tidbits from other sources. To wit:

“…we don’t expect that Amazon will put out an e-ink e-reader for less than $79 (the current entry-level Kindle sells for $79). Rather, it will simply improve upon the existing $79 Kindle.”

If the earlier rumors about new E Ink devises are accurate, this could all be happening in July. I see that July 31 is a Tuesday, and I’m available for a train ride to New York City! Exciting news, and I’ll keep you posted as I hear more.

As you probably know, Amazon has already ‘improved’ the $79 Kindle: the 4.1 update adds KF8 support, better small fonts, parental controls, improved table/image viewing.

KF8 support is supposed to include fixed-layout KF8 (children’s books, comic books) though it seems existing titles will need to be updated or new content authored specifically for eink Kindle.

KF8 is a pretty significant improvement IMO.

The other rumor (concerning ‘self-lighted’ Kindles) might also be part of the announcement. Hope Amazon’s implementation is less fragile than Nook GlowLight’s appears to be.
