Interview starts at 17:43 and ends at 42:24

“I’ve been writing a realistic fictional narrative for my class as an assignment. There are certain phrases in [Kindle] books that have been highlighted 300 times or a thousand times. I try to make my phrases be like those phrases, because I’ve gotten to know what are the powerful phrases that people are going to highlight.” (James, age 11)

Next Week’s Show

I will be reporting from the American Library Association midwinter meeting here in Denver on next week’s show, which I will prepare in Cambridge, Mass.

Music for my podcast is from an original Thelonius Monk composition named “Well, You Needn’t.” This version is “Ra-Monk” by Eval Manigat on the “Variations in Time: A Jazz Perspective” CD by Public Transit Recording” CD.

Been listening to the podcast since I got my first Kindle almost 10 years ago. Just listened to your grandson talking about Number the Stars. One of our local theaters, Haddonfield Plays and Players, does an annual musical play of the show. They have showings for middle school students and the public. Many of the shows are followed by a presentation by a Holocaust survivor, a rapidly diminishing population. My granddaughter has had the honor of playing Ellen Rosen the last two years. Interestingly, my grandaughter, a Christian, plays the Jewish girl, while the roles of the Christian sisters are played by two Jewish girls. Here is a link to the first song of the show sung by the three girls. My granddaughter, who was 12 at the time, is the brunette. I thought your grandson James might get a kick out of a dramatization of the book he picked out for his great grandfather.

Wow. Your granddaughter is a beautiful singer, Bart. I was moved watching this clip. Thanks very much for sharing it with us–and for your long time of listening to the show!
