I have started reading a new book by Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch titled APE: Author, Publisher, Entrepreneur – How to Publish a Book and it looks terrific. I have been a big fan of Kawasaki’s ever since I saw him on stage at South by Southwest in 2009 when he interviewed Chris Anderson, former editor of WIRED Magazine. Kawasaki’s interviewing style was grounded, alert, free of any sucking up or egotistic posturing. I was very impressed. He has a storied history at Apple and is a member of Silicon Valley royalty. But that grounded presence is what I associate with him.
I also like that this book grew out of Kawasaki’s own experience self-publishing his previous book, What the Plus! Google + for the Rest of Us. He wrote the new book with the person who helped him untangle the challenges of self-publishing, Shawn Welch. Here is a quote from the Preface:
A successful self-publisher must fill three roles: Author, Publisher, and Entrepreneur–or APE. These roles are challenging, but they are not impossible–especially if people who have done it before explain it to you. And that’s what Shawn and I will do in the book you are now reading. Our goal is to help you succeed as a self-publisher as quickly and easily as possible.
If you are an Amazon Prime member and have a Kindle, you can borrow APE for free. Otherwise, the Kindle version, which was released last month, is priced at $9.99. The 386-page paperback for $24.99 is being released today. I plan reach out to Kawasaki for a future Kindle Chronicles interview, to learn more about his adventures in self-publishing. Meanwhile, this book has zoomed to the top of my active reading list. I can’t wait to dig into it. If you are reading it, please feel free to leave a comment about it here. At Amazon this morning, it has already garnered 179 five-star reviews.
