TKC 93 Stephen Windwalker

News – Item 1: Score another one for the Kindle: a Los Angeles Times investigative piece quotes warnings from sleep experts that holding a bright LCD screen close to your face for bedtime reading is not recommended if you suffer from insomnia.  The unnatural brightness retards the body’s secretion of melatonin.  The Rx?  A soothing Kindle or other e-Ink screen for falling asleep – especially at the beach! Item 2: New Yorker media columnist Ken Auletta‘s interview with Terry Gross on NPR’s Fresh Air. Item 3: nook in the news with a software update, strong shipments (with a caveat)  in March, and a cute new TV ad.

Tech Tip – How to deregister a Kindle you’re giving to someone, based on my experience this week sending the first two E-Books for Troops Kindles to Afghanistan. (Click here to donate.)

Interview – Stephen Windwalker, creator of the must-read Kindle Nation Daily and iPad Nation Daily blogs, spoke with me on April 27, 2010, about how the Kindle is winning the war and whether the iPad is Jeff Bezos’s nightmare – or an anticipated opportunity for Amazon to remain at the head of the e-books table.  You can try out a 14-day free trial to the Kindle edition of either blog by clicking here for Kindle Nation and here for iPad Nation.

Content – Worth checking out, and not for women only: The sassy, smart and occasionally outrageous Kindle Women podcast and the Girl eBooks blog.

Comments – A question about Calibre from Amy DeVitt, a funny Kindle comic strip emailed by Jeff Freedman, and Blair Slavin decides he likes his iPad better than his Kindle.

THIS JUST IN (Too late for the audio): Jesslyn of My Kindle Stuff just alerted me (Wednesday evening) to the Kindle’s new software update, version 2.5, to be released soon.  Features: collections to organize your stuff, zoom and pan PDFs, password protection, more fonts, improved clarity, Facebook & Twitter posts and “Popular Highlights” as in “See what the Kindle community thinks are the most interesting passages in the books you’re reading.” Very cool.
