I agree with many of Cory Doctorow's arguments.

The problem is that licensing agreements -- legal contracts -- are allowed to be more restrictive than 'the law'. When we agree to abide by a license, we generally renounce the Right of First Sale.

But. If we stop entering into licensing agreements of this nature, and as a result do indeed end up 'owning' our e-books, we will probably be allowed to have only a single copy. Very likely meaning, bye-bye to the handy 'cloud' and safe digital library at Amazon. But we could sell, trade, lend, or whatever, that file. And while the file was lent, we would *not be allowed to possess the file*.

I'd like Right of First Sale; but I do not want anything electronic to be treated as a print analogue. Remember those early Sony Readers that did not permit *searching*, underlining or highlighting? Definitely not for me. So I'm still a little torn. Waiting for someone more imaginative than I am to come up with a good solution to this quandary.

For now, the limitations of the Kindle and my electronic book purchases from Amazon are pretty invisible to me, because so far they don't conflict with how I use my device. But as of now, I have only two acquaintances who also own Kindles -- no friends, yet.

Len
I was going to order a K2 through your website but the link is "Get Widget" for placing the link on the website, not the actual link that tells them who to send the commission too, I think.

I came across this article on Cyber Monday. I'm wondering if you have any information about this company. They claim to have the Nook in stock for $259. They are also offering the Kindle 2 for $230 and the Kindle DX for $399.

Dave, I think there are a couple of new faces of authors in the lineup of images which cycle through when your Kindle goes to sleep. Eventually you'll see the new ones. I think Ralph Ellison is one, and I'm not sure who the other one is.

Hi Len,

The 2.3 update has been installed manually on my K2. Much has been said about new screen savers, but I haven't been able to see them. Are they just more pictures added to the Dead Authors pictures or is there some other way to get at them I haven't figured out yet?

Thanks for all of the work you do enlightening the Kindle community.

The interview with David Weinberger was most interesting, especially his comments about books becoming social media. He wondered what might happen if on our Kindles (or other devices) we could see friends' comments on particular chapters. Well, it's already being done, to a limited extent, with YouVersion (http://www.youversion.com/). The site offers Bibles in dozens of translations with the ability to add comments (and Web links) to any verse. There are free apps for the iPhone and Blackberry. Were this idea extended to general books, I'm not sure I'd ever finish a chapter!

Also I must say I think the cursor is now quicker on the screen and I do believe the battery is lasting longer as i have had the wireless on for 2 days and the battery icon has barely moved.

I got the email for the upgrade but after 4 days of waiting for it to download on its own I ended up having to manually update it. The sideways screen orientation is odd because of where the page turning buttons are. It added 3 new screen savers. Haven't tried the conversion thing.
